Dr. Jeffery Bingham
In behalf of Southwestern Seminary, Dorothy and I invite you on a once-in-a-lifetime journey through the land of the Reformation, led by noted biblical scholar and dean of Southwestern Seminary’s School of Theology, Dr. Jeff Bingham. Join us as we explore Germany’s rich history of faith and culture while celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant reformation.
Our tour begins in Berlin, a city full of ancient history (Pergamon Museum) as well as modern sites (Berlin Wall), and then takes us back in time to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg where Luther nailed his legendary 95 theses. We will also explore Luther’s college town of Erfurt; Wartburg Castle (where we will actually stay in a favorite hotel of ours), where Luther translated the New Testament; and Luther’s birthplace in Eisleben. Stand in the very places where Martin Luther worked, preached, and started a movement of enormous impact on the church, culture, and beyond.
Dorothy and I look forward to having you as our guest in Germany. We are planning to join you for as much of the trip as we can! We have also invited Dr. Candi Finch to join us for a lecture on the women of the Reformation.
DAY 01 – SAT. JUL. 01 – DEPARTURE FROM THE USA
DAY 02 – SUN. JUL. 02 – ARRIVE BERLIN
Upon arrival at Berlin Airport you will be met by our tour manager and private luxury motor coach for the drive to the hotel in Berlin. You will have some free time to explore this exciting city which is a vibrant and innovative center of art, culture and history. One of its most famous sights is the strategic Brandenburg Gate – the triumphal arch which is the very emblem of Berlin, built in 1789 inspired by the Propylaea of the Parthenon, Unter den Linden, the famous avenue ‘under the lime trees’ conceived in 1647, and the State Opera House. Another famous sight is the Neo-Renaissance palace, the Reichstag, which was damaged heavily in World War II, and which has recently undergone an incredible rebuilding programme under the direction of the world famous British architect Norman Foster. Some may want to visit Pergamon Museum with its priceless archaeological treasures from Iraq. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner in Berlin. Overnight at the Adlon Kempinski Hotel Berlin.
DAY 03 – MON. JUL. 03 – BERLIN / WITTENBERG / LEIPZIG
This morning we leave Berlin and drive to Wittenberg known as ‘Lutherstadt’ where Martin Luther, the founder of the Protestant movement, lived and taught for 36 years. We will visit the Museum of the Reformation at Luther House as well as Stadtkirche and Schlosskirche, now rebuilt in baroque style of 1760, but on the original doors, Luther pinned up his famous 95 Articles condemning the abuses practiced by the church (1517). The church contains the text, which was cast in bronze in 1855, as well as Luther’s tomb. After lunch in Wittenberg we will depart for Leipzig. Overnight in Leipzig at the Hotel Fürstenhof.
DAY 04 – TUE. JUL. 04 – LEIPZIG (TORGAU)
Today we will visit Torgau, once the Saxonian residential city and political centre of the Reformation in the 16th century. We will visit the Castle Church. Martin Luther sanctified this church as the first protestant church. The tombstone of Katharina von Bora, Martin Luther’s wife, can be found in St. Mary’s church which we will also visit. The only existing memorial of her is located in her last residence. After lunch in Torgau we drive back to Leipzig. The city is known for its patron musician Bach. Leipzig was pivotal in the reunification of East and West Germany in 1989 as it was here that protests began in January of that year. We have a walking tour through Leipzig to include the St Thomas Church where Johann Sebastian Bach is buried. Overnight in Leipzig at the Hotel Fürstenhof.
DAY 05 – WED. JUL. 05 – LEIPZIG / EISLEBEN / EISENACH
Leaving Leipzig this morning we will visit Eisleben which is noted among the most significant locations in Luther’s history. He was born here in 1483 and died here in 1546, and old manuscripts indicated that he felt a special affinity to Eisleben. We will visit the house of his birth and death, St. Andrews Church where he preached his last sermon, the Luther Monument, and St Peter and St Paul Church. After lunch in Eisleben we will continue to Eisenach. Eisenach is the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach. Luther studied here before beginning the translation of the New Testament under the patronage of the Duke of Saxony. In the market place we will see the Town Hall in the 16th century Baroque and Renaissance styles, Pfarrkirche St Georg, 16th c. where Luther preached 1521 and where Bach was baptized in 1685. Dinner and overnight at the Romantik Hotel auf der Wartburg (located in Wartburg Castle).
DAY 06 – THU. JUL. 06 – EISENACH / ERFURT
This morning we will visit Wartburg fortress a poignant key site in the story of Martin Luther. The fortress lies outside Eisenach on the top of a rocky spur. The oldest part dates from 12th century, but most interesting parts date from 1500’s. You will have a guided tour of this interesting medieval fortress with its Knights Hall, Banqueting Hall, the Elizabeth Gallery with its fine frescoes, and the room where Luther lived and worked. Here in the castle in exile after his defiant speech at Worms, Luther translated the Bible into German. We will also visit the Luther House in Eisenach where Luther is supposed to have lived as a schoolboy from 1498 to 1501. After lunch in Eisenach we will visit Erfurt. Erfurt It is one of the oldest and best preserved cities in Germany. You will visit the City Cathedral, St Severin’s Church and the Kramerbrucke which is more than 600 years old, with its many unique shops. Also visit the Luther Memorial at the Augustan Monastery (founded 13th century) where the great reformer was admitted to the Hermit’s Order in 1505. Return to Eisenach for overnight at the Romantik Hotel auf der Wartburg.
DAY 07 – FRI. JUL. 07 – EISENACH / WORMS / MAINZ / FRANKFURT
After breakfast you will leave Eisenach for Worms. Worms is the city where Martin Luther challenged the Roman Catholic establishment during the Imperial Diet in 1521. It was also here that William Tyndale completed the printing of his English version of the New Testament in 1525. After seeing St. Peter’s Church and the symbolic Luther Memorial you will continue to Mainz. Enjoy a guided tour of Mainz. See the Roman temple, the royal palace, the Cathedral, Marc Chagall‘s blue stained-glass window. You will also visit the Gutenberg Museum and see the bible, which is kept at the museum – and see the first printing press invented by Johannes Gutenberg.
